[[John Forbes (British Army officer)|Brigadier General John Forbes]]'s [[Forbes Expedition|Expedition of 1758]] passed through the area that became Larimer Township, near Will's Creek, as they hacked [[Forbes Road]] out of the western Pennsylvania wilderness.<ref name="Walkinshaw">{{cite book |last=Walkinshaw |first=Lewis Clark |title=Annals of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Volume 2 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=DlAMAAAAYAAJ |year=1939 |publisher=Lewis Historical Pub. Co. |location=New York |page=301}}</ref> (The reference that it was [[Edward Braddock|Major General Edward Braddock]]'s [[Braddock Expedition|Expedition of 1755]] that passed through this area<ref name="WatermanWatkins">{{cite book |title=History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania |url=https://archive.org/details/pa-bedford-somerset-fulton-1884-waterman |year=1884 |publisher=Waterman, Watkins & Co. |location=Chicago |pages=[https://archive.org/details/pa-bedford-somerset-fulton-1884-waterman/page/n799 589]-590}}</ref> seems to have mixed up these two expeditions, since [[Braddock Road (Braddock expedition)|Braddock's Road]] passes through the extreme southwest corner of Somerset County.) Jonathan Long arrived in the area as early as 1783, and Richard Geiger was another early settler, possibly around the same time as Long.<ref name="WatermanWatkins" /> Daniel Lepley moved into Larimer Township in 1849 and built a gristmill here in 1850.<ref name="WatermanWatkins" /> The township was officially organized in 1854.<ref name="WatermanWatkins" />

A portion of the township's land was used to incorporate the borough of [[Callimont, Pennsylvania|Callimont]] in 1972 to build a ski resort. The resort was never completed and the borough used a lot of the township's resources during its history, including the use of the township's municipal building to hold the borough council meetings.
