== Early life and education ==
Bacon was born and raised in a close-knit family in [[Philadelphia]].<ref name="actor">{{cite web|title=Kevin Bacon|url=http://www.biography.com/people/kevin-bacon-9542173|work=Biography.com|access-date=July 21, 2012}}</ref> He is the youngest of six children. His mother, Ruth Hilda ({{née|Holmes}}; 1916–1991), taught at an elementary school and was a liberal activist,<ref name="actor"/> while his father, [[Edmund Bacon (architect)|Edmund Bacon]] (1910–2005), was an [[urban planning|urban planner]] who served as executive director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission and authored the seminal text ''[[Design of Cities]]''.<ref name="bacon"/>

Bacon attended [[Julia R.
