Over the centuries some changes have been made to the Kannada script. These changes consist of:
# Modification of existing glyphs: In the early Kannada script, no orthographic distinction was made between the short mid {{IPA|[e, o]}} {{lang|kn|ಎ}}, {{lang|kn|ಒ}} and long mid {{IPA|[eː, oː]}} {{lang|kn|ಏ}}, {{lang|kn|ಓ}}. However, distinct signs were employed to denote the special consonants viz. the trill {{IPA|[r]}} {{lang|kn|ಱ}} the retroflex lateral {{IPA|[ɭ]}} {{lang|kn|ಳ}} and the retroflex rhotic {{IPA|[ɻ]}} {{lang|kn|ೞ}}, by the 5th century.{{dubious|date=August 2015}}{{fix|text=the transcriptions contradict themselves}}
