Kalbarri National Park preserves the inland desert regions of red and white striped [[Tumblagooda sandstone]] east of the town of Kalbarri, particularly the lower reaches of the Murchison River and its [[canyon|gorge]], as well as the mouth of the river by Meanarra Hill.<ref name=parksite>{{cite web|url=http://parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au/park/kalbarri|title=Kalbarri National Park / Welcome and Sites & Activities tabs|publisher=Department of Parks and Wildlife - Western Australia|year=2013|access-date=3 April 2014}}</ref>

The western edge of the park protects the coastline south of the town which features cliffs more than {{convert|100|m|ft|0}} high. The coastal area contains several wind and water eroded rock formations including a [[Stack (geology)|sea stack]] and a [[natural arch|natural bridge]].<ref name=parksite/>
