==Biography==
Goldsmith obtained his [[Bachelor of Arts|B.A.]] at [[Swarthmore College]] in 1972, and completed his [[PhD]] in Linguistics at [[MIT]] in 1976, under the linguist [[Morris Halle]].<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://linguistics.mit.edu/alumni/#1976|title=Alumni and their Dissertations – MIT Linguistics|website=linguistics.mit.edu|language=en-US|access-date=2018-03-12}}</ref> He was on the faculty of the Department of Linguistics at [[Indiana University]]<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.indiana.edu/~iulcwp/wp/article/download/10-06A/150|title=African Linguistics at IU|last=Botne|first=Robert|access-date=2018-03-12|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160511234837/https://www.indiana.edu/~iulcwp/wp/article/download/10-06A/150|archive-date=2016-05-11|url-status=dead}}</ref> before joining the University of Chicago in 1984. He has taught at the [[Linguistic Society of America#Linguistic institutes|LSA Linguistic Institutes]] and has held visiting appointments at many universities, such as [[McGill University|McGill]], [[Harvard]], and [[University of California, San Diego|UCSD]].
