== Early life == Pepusch studied music theory under Martin Klingenberg, cantor of the [[St. Mary's Church, Berlin|Marienkirche]] in Berlin.<ref name="TE">{{cite book|author=Tim Eggington|title=The Advancement of Music in Enlightenment England: Benjamin Cooke and the Academy of Ancient Music|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=gxcABQAAQBAJ&pg=PA15|year=2014|publisher=Boydell & Brewer Ltd|isbn=978-1-84383-906-4|pages=15β}}</ref> At the age of 14, he was appointed to the [[Prussian court]] where he gave music lessons to the future [[Frederick William I of Prussia]]. He resigned this position in 1698 after witnessing the execution of an officer without trial. He then first went to Amsterdam. In 1704, he settled in England,<ref name="JAS">{{cite book|author=Julie Anne Sadie|title=Companion to Baroque Music|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Ip6voIceW0AC&pg=PA300|date=1998-01-01|publisher=University of California Press|isbn=978-0-520-21414-9|page=300}}</ref> but he continued to publish in [[Amsterdam]] until 1718.
