He was the maternal great-grandnephew of [[William Steeves]], a [[Fathers of Confederation|Father of Confederation]], and his grandfather, [[Gilbert Layton]], had served as a minister without portfolio to the government of Quebec's [[Union Nationale (Quebec)|Union Nationale]] under Premier [[Maurice Duplessis]].
