The name Indianapolis is derived from pairing the state's name, ''Indiana'' (meaning "Land of the Indians", or simply "Indian Land"<ref>An earlier use of the name dates to the 1760s when it referenced a tract of land under the control of the Commonwealth of Virginia, but the area's name was discarded when it became a part of that state.
