The English word ''[[wikt:incest|incest]]'' is derived from the Latin ''incestus'', which has a general meaning of "impure, unchaste". It was introduced into [[Middle English]], both in the generic Latin sense (preserved throughout the Middle English period)<ref>[[OED]] [[Ancrene Riwle]] (c. 1225) has ''Incest‥is bituȝe sibbe fleschliche'', where either the generic or the narrow sense may be intended.
