Hislop applied to read [[philosophy, politics and economics]] at Oxford, but changed to [[English literature]] before arriving at [[Magdalen College, Oxford|Magdalen College]]. His Oxford tutors included [[Bernard O'Donoghue]], [[John Fuller (poet)|John Fuller]] and [[David Norbrook]].
