==Etymology== The word Holocene was formed from two Ancient Greek words. Hólos (grc) is the Greek word for "whole". "Cene" comes from the Greek word kainós (grc), meaning "new". The concept is that this epoch is "entirely new".<ref>The name "Holocene" was proposed in 1850 by the French palaeontologist and entomologist Paul Gervais (1816–1879): {{cite journal |last1=Gervais |first1=Paul |title=Sur la répartition des mammifères fossiles entre les différents étages tertiaires qui concourent à former le sol de la France |journal=Académie des Sciences et Lettres de Montpellier.
