==100β1450== The island was originally inhabited by [[Arawaks|Arawak]] and [[Island Caribs|Carib]] peoples. Circa 130 AD, the first Arawaks are believed to have arrived from South America. In 295 A.D, an eruption of [[Mount PelΓ©e]] resulted in the decimation of the island's population. Around 400 A.D, the Arawaks returned and repopulated the island. Around 600 A.D, the Caribs arrived. They exterminated the Arawaks and proceeded to settle on the island over the next few centuries.
