==Early life==
Kendall was born in a settler's hut by Yackungarrah Creek in [[Yatte Yattah]]<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.ulladulla.info/henry-kendall-birthplace-cairn-1913|title = Henry Kendall Birthplace Cairn 1913 &#124; Ulladulla.Info|date = 24 April 2010}}</ref> near [[Ulladulla, New South Wales]], twin son (with Basil Edward Kendall) of Basil Kendall (1809–1852) and his wife Matilda Kendall, née McNally c. 1815, and baptised in the [[Presbyterianism|Presbyterian]] church.<ref name=Worker1928/> His father was the second son of Rev. Journalist and fellow poet [[A. G. He received only a slight education.  When he was 15 he went to sea with one of his uncles on a whaling voyage and was away for about two years.
