Hatch was originally settled as '''Santa Barbara''' in 1851; however, Apache raids drove the farmers away until 1853, when the nearby [[Fort Thorn, New Mexico|Fort Thorn]] was established.<ref name="Julyan">Julyan, Robert Hixson (1998) "Hatch " ''The place names of New Mexico'' (2nd ed.)
