[[Hamilcar]] is the [[latinization of names|latinization]] of ''Hamílkas'' ({{langx|grc|Ἁμίλκας}}), the [[hellenization|hellenized]] form of the common [[Semitic languages|Semitic]] Phoenician-Carthaginian [[masculine name|masculine]] [[given name]] {{sc|ḥmlk}} ({{langx|xpu|𐤇𐤌𐤋𐤊}})<ref name=g>{{harvp|Geus|1994|loc=s.v. It is cognate with the [[Arabic name]] Barq, [[Maltese language|Maltese]] word Berqa, the Assyrian Neo-Aramaic name Barkho, and the [[Hebrew name]] [[Barak (given name)|Barak]], and equivalent to the [[Ancient Greek language|Greek]] ''Keraunos'', which was borne by many commanders contemporary with Hamilcar and his son Hannibal.<ref>S.
