The etymology of the name is not clear,{{sfnp|Hirsch|1906}} and its form has no parallel in Hebrew.{{sfnp|Andersen|2001|p=89}} The name is possibly related to the [[Akkadian language|Akkadian]] ''khambbaququ'' ({{langx|akk|𒄩𒄠𒁀𒄣𒄣}}, ''ḫâmbaququ''), the name of a fragrant plant,{{sfnp|Hirsch|1906}} or the Hebrew root {{langx|he|חבק}}, meaning "embrace".
