Groesbeck was founded as West Union. When the community established a post office in 1857 it was discovered there was already a [[West Union, Ohio|West Union]] in Ohio and so the name was changed.<ref>{{cite book | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=hsjp6apjBI8C&pg=PA7 | title=Colerain Township | publisher=Arcadia Publishing | year=2010 | access-date=2 December 2013 | author=Scholle, Frank | pages=7| isbn=9780738584331 }}</ref> The new name was taken from the surname of [[William S.
