The president is elected by popular vote for a single seven-year term.<ref>[https://www.akorda.kz/en/constitution-of-the-republic-of-kazakhstan-50912 Article 41 of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan]</ref> The prime minister and first deputy prime minister are appointed by the president. The Council of Ministers is also appointed by the president. Then-president [[Nursultan Nazarbayev]] expanded his presidential powers by decree: only he can initiate [[constitutional amendment]]s, appoint and dismiss the government, [[Dissolution of parliament|dissolve Parliament]], call [[referendum]]s at his discretion, and appoint [[Akim|administrative heads]] of [[Regions of Kazakhstan|regions]] and [[City|cities]].

The president is the head of state and [[commander-in-chief]] of the [[Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan|armed forces]] and may veto legislation that has been passed by the Parliament.

The prime minister, who serves at the pleasure of the president, chairs the Council of Ministers and serves as Kazakhstan's head of government. There are three deputy prime ministers and 17 ministers in the council. The most recent Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan is [[Oljas Bektenov]].

===Agencies and committees===
Kazakhstan's [[National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan|National Security Committee]] (NSC) was established on 13 June 1992. It includes the Service of Internal Security, Military Counterintelligence, Border Guard, several Commandos units, and [[Foreign Intelligence Service (Kazakhstan)|Foreign Intelligence (Barlau)]]. The latter is considered by many as the most important part of NSC. Penitentiary Service Committee is a part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
