==History== Geneva County was established on December 26, 1868 from Coffee, Dale, and Henry counties.<ref>Clements, John (1991). ''Alabama Facts: A Comprehensive Look at Alabama Today County by County''. Dallas, Texas: Clements Research H, Inc. p. 304.</ref> The county was named after its county seat, which in turn was named after [[Geneva, New York]], which was named after [[Geneva]], Switzerland, by Walter H. Yonge, an early town resident and Swiss native.<ref name="ALARCH">{{cite web |date=June 4, 2009 |title=Geneva County |url=http://www.archives.state.al.us/counties/geneva.html |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171008163451/http://www.archives.state.al.us/counties/geneva.html |archive-date=October 8, 2017 |access-date=August 1, 2009 |publisher=Alabama Department of Archives and History}}</ref> The county was declared a disaster area in September 1979 due to damage from [[Hurricane Frederic]]. On March 10, 2009, a gunman, identified as Michael McLendon, went on [[Geneva County shootings|a shooting spree]] at nine locations in Geneva County from the town of [[Samson, Alabama|Samson]] to the city of [[Geneva, Alabama|Geneva]], killing ten people and wounding six others. McLendon entered his former place of employment, Reliable Metal Products on the northeastern side of Geneva, where he killed himself.
