==History== Gates' first post office was established in 1882 on the south side of the [[Santiam River]] as Henness, named for the first postmaster, Jane Henness. The post office later moved to the north side of the river as Gatesville but the post office was established with the name Gates on February 12, 1892. The name honored one of the oldest settlers in the area, Mary Gates.<ref>[http://www.oregoncities.us/gates/index.htm City of Gates Oregon]. Oregoncities.us (October 12, 2007). Retrieved on June 5, 2012.</ref> The city was incorporated in 1950. The town was the headquarters for controlling the [[Beachie Creek Fire]], which started August 16, 2020, and at the time was estimated to be {{convert|469|acre}} in size. However, dry vegetation and a historic windstorm during the night of September 7 rapidly increased the fire to {{convert|131000|acre}}, threatening the town and forcing the firefighters to evacuate their encampment.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7001/|title=Beachie Creek Fire|website=InciWeb|access-date=September 14, 2020}}</ref> Gates was extensively damaged by the wildfire.<ref>{{cite news|last=Ryan|first=Jim|url=https://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/2020/09/oregon-wildfires-monday-firefighting-conditions-improve-in-clackamas-county-air-quality-remains-poor-live-updates.html|title=Oregon Wildfires on Monday: Firefighting Conditions Improve in Clackamas County; Air Quality Remains Poor|website=Oregonlive.com|access-date=September 14, 2020}}</ref>
