==History== The Village of Gaines area did not see a settler until 1856. The first passenger train passed through the future village site on July 4, 1856, and a post office, Gaines Station, was established that same year. In 1859, the village was platted.<ref>{{cite book| last = Wood| first = Edwin O.| title =History of Genesee County, Michigan, Her People, Industries and Institutions| publisher = Michigan Historical Commission| year = 1916 | url =http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mi/county/lapeer/gen/ch5/gaines.html}}</ref> The [[Grand Trunk Western Railroad]] depot, built in 1884.<ref>{{cite web |title=Gaines, MI |url=http://www.michiganrailroads.com/stations-locations/89-genesee-county-25/786-gaines-mi |website=Michiganrailroads.com |access-date=June 19, 2020}}</ref> The Village of Gaines was incorporated in 1875.<ref>{{cite book|last1=Wood|first1=Edwin O.|title=The History of Genesee, Michigan|date=1916|url=http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mi/county/lapeer/gen/ch26/pt2.html|access-date=September 19, 2017|chapter=Villages of Genesee, Part II}}</ref> The Gaines Train Station saw its last passengers boarded and disembarked in 1957. In the 1970s, a business occupied the building. After setting vacant for years, the S.O.S. β Save Our Station group of Gaines residents organized in 1992 to restore the station. SOS later incorporated as the nonprofit Gaines Station Incorporated. After $100,000 in repairs in 1997, the station was turned over to the village. The station then began its use as the smallest branch of the Genesee District Library. On July 15, 2017, a Michigan Historical Marker was unveiled for the station.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Rocha |first1=Lania |title=From rails to tales |url=https://swartzcreekview.mihomepaper.com/articles/from-rails-to-tales/ |access-date=June 19, 2020 |work=Swartz Creek View |publisher=The View Newspaper Group |date=July 20, 2017}}</ref> In August 2016, the village's lone police officer retired. By March 9, 2017, the village council formally dissolved the police department and Gaines Township purchased the police car.<ref name="scv">{{cite news|last1=Rocha|first1=Lania|title=Twp. buys village police cruiser |url=http://swartzcreekview.mihomepaper.com/news/2017-03-09/News_Briefs/Twp_buys_village_police_cruiser.html |access-date=March 30, 2017 |work=Swartz Creek View |publisher=JAMS Media |date=March 9, 2017|language=en}}</ref>
