The first [[international organization]] which the Israeli government joined was the [[International Wheat Council]], established as part of [[Point Four Program]] in early 1949. Israel has been a member of the United Nations since 11 May 1949.

Israel is a member of many UN agencies, including the Office of the [[United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees]] (UNHCR) and the [[Food and Agriculture Organization]] (FAO). Within the UNESCO, Israel was a member in many international programs and organizations. In the area of science, Israel was an active member of the [[Man and the Biosphere Programme]] (MAB), the [[Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission]] (IOC), the [[International Hydrological Programme]] (IHP), the [[International Centre for Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science Applications in the Middle East]] (SESAME), and the [[International Geoscience Programme]] (IGCP).

After over 50 years of not being part of a regional grouping in the UN (effectively shut out of many internationals organizations), Israel joined the [[Western European and Others Group|Western European and Others group]] on a temporary basis in 2000. Israel joined on a permanent basis in 2014.
