== Name ==
The [[Fatimid dynasty]] claimed descent from [[Fatimah]], the daughter of the [[Prophets and messengers in Islam|Islamic prophet]] [[Muhammad]]. Emphasizing its [[Alid]] descent, the dynasty named itself simply the 'Alid dynasty' ({{transliteration|ar|al-dawla al-alawiyya}}),{{sfn|Canard|1965|p=852}} but many hostile [[Sunni]] sources only refer to them as the Ubaydids ({{transliteration|ar|Banu Ubayd}}), after the diminutive form Ubayd Allah for the name of the first Fatimid caliph.{{sfn|Canard|1965|p=852}}
