==Biography==
Information on his biography is limited. He was born in [[Cyme (Aeolis)|Cyme]], [[Aeolis|Aeolia]], and together with the historian [[Theopompus]] was a pupil of [[Isocrates]] in [[rhetoric]].<ref>A. Momigliano, 'History and Biography', in Moses I Finley (Ed), (1981) ''The Legacy of Greece'', Oxford, Clarendon Press, 164.</ref> He does not seem to have made much progress as a speaker, and at the suggestion of Isocrates himself he took up literary composition and the study of [[history]].{{sfn|Chisholm|1911}} According to [[Plutarch]], Ephorus declined [[Alexander the Great]]'s offer to join him on his [[Alexander the Great#Conquest of the Achaemenid Persian Empire|Persian campaign]] as the official [[Historiography|historiographer]].<ref>[[Plutarch]] (mor. p. 1043d = T 6).</ref> His son Demophilus followed in his footsteps as a historian.
