==Geography== According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], the county has a total area of {{convert|374|sqmi}}, of which {{convert|351|sqmi}} is land and {{convert|23|sqmi}} (6.2%) is water.<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=April 23, 2011|date=February 12, 2011|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> The county is located in the [[Piedmont (United States)|Piedmont]] region of the state. The northern half of Elbert County, north of a line made by following [[Georgia State Route 17|State Route 17]] from [[Bowman, Georgia|Bowman]] southeast to [[Elberton, Georgia|Elberton]], and then following [[Georgia State Route 72|State Route 72]] east to just before the [[South Carolina]] border, and then heading south along the shores of [[Lake Richard B. Russell & Clarkes Hill]] to the county's southeastern tip, is located in the Upper [[Savannah River]] sub-basin of the larger Savannah River basin.
