==History== Edgar County was formed out of [[Clark County, Illinois|Clark County]] in 1823. It was named for [[John Edgar (politician)|John Edgar]],<ref>{{Citation|last=Adams|first=James N. (compiler)|year=1989|publication-date=1989|editor-last=Keller|editor-first=William E.|title=Illinois Place Names|publication-place=Springfield|publisher=Illinois State Historical Society|page=[https://archive.org/details/illinoisplacenam00adam/page/580 580]|isbn=0-912226-24-2|url-access=registration|url=https://archive.org/details/illinoisplacenam00adam/page/580}}</ref> an [[Ireland|Irish]]-born officer in the [[Royal Navy]] who resigned rather than fight against the Americans in the [[American Revolutionary War|Revolutionary War]].
