==Name== According to one local legend, Cut and Shoot was named after a 1912 community confrontation that almost led to violence. According to differing versions of the story, the dispute was over:<ref name=Handbook>{{cite web |url=https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/hlc65 |title=Cut and Shoot, TX |author=Handbook of Texas Online |date=12 June 2010 |publisher=Texas State Historical Association |accessdate=3 Jan 2021 |archive-date=19 July 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190719052208/https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/hlc65 |url-status=live }}</ref> *The design of a new steeple for the town's only church, *The issue of who should be allowed to preach there, or *The conflicting land claims among church members. Whatever the circumstances were, a small boy at the scene reportedly said he was scared and declared, "I'm going to cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes in a minute!" This statement apparently stayed in the residents' minds and was eventually adopted as the town's name.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.cutandshoot.org/documents/history.htm |title=HOW CUT AND SHOOT GOT ITS NAME |author= |date=10 August 2006 |publisher=City of Cut and Shoot, Texas |accessdate=19 October 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110725213653/http://www.cutandshoot.org/documents/history.htm |archive-date=25 July 2011 |url-status=dead}}</ref> "Cut and Shoot" has frequently been noted on lists of [[Place names considered unusual|unusual place names]].<ref>{{cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=29zh3dIgmv8C&pg=PR9 |title=Welcome to Horneytown, North Carolina, Population: 15: An insider's guide to 201 of the world's weirdest and wildest places |publisher=Adams Media |author=Parker, Quentin |year=2010 |pages=ix |isbn=9781440507397 }}{{Dead link|date=May 2023 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}</ref><ref>{{cite book |last1=Birnbach |first1=Lisa |last2=Marx |first2=Patricia |last3=Hodgman |first3=Ann |title=1,003 Great Things About America |url=https://archive.org/details/1003greatthingsa0000birn |url-access=registration |date=14 May 2002 |publisher=Andrews McMeel Publishing |isbn=978-0-7407-2949-2 |page=[https://archive.org/details/1003greatthingsa0000birn/page/165 165]}}</ref>
