The name Conconully comes from the [[Okanagan language|Okanogan]] name for Salmon Creek, /qʷúnqʷunɬp/, which flows from Conconully to the [[Okanogan River]] at [[Okanogan, Washington|Okanogan]].<ref>{{cite book |last= Bright |first= William |title= Native American Placenames of the United States |url= https://books.google.com/books?id=5XfxzCm1qa4C&pg=PA118 |accessdate= February 1, 2023 |year= 2004 |publisher= University of Oklahoma Press |page= 118|isbn= 978-0-8061-3598-4 }}</ref> According to historian Harry M. On May 27, 1894, the town was devastated when an unusually heavy storm caused Salmon Creek to overflow. Debris-filled water more than 30 feet high rushed through canyons toward the town. One resident witnessed the oncoming flood and rode his horse through town warning the residents.
