== Etymology ==
The word ''Coelacanth'' is an adaptation of the Modern Latin {{Lang|la|Cœlacanthus}} ('hollow spine'), from the [[Ancient Greek]] {{lang|grc|κοῖλ-ος}} ({{transliteration|grc|koilos}}, 'hollow') and {{lang|grc|ἄκανθ-α}} ({{transliteration|grc|akantha}}, 'spine'),<ref>{{cite web|title = The Coelancanth|url = http://www.actforlibraries.org/the-coelancanth/|website = actforlibraries.org|access-date = 2015-10-30}}</ref> referring to the hollow [[caudal fin]] rays of the first fossil specimen described and named by [[Louis Agassiz]] in 1839, belonging to the genus ''[[Coelacanthus]]''.<ref name=ref1 />{{rp|1}} The genus name ''Latimeria'' commemorates [[Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer]], who discovered the first specimen.<ref>{{cite web|title = Smithsonian Institution – The Coelacanth: More Living than Fossil|url = http://vertebrates.si.edu/fishes/coelacanth/coelacanth_wider.html|website = vertebrates.si.edu|access-date = 2015-10-30}}</ref>
