== Early life and education ==

His mother died at age 47, and his father died the following year when Davis was still a teenager. He then moved in with his married sister, who lived in [[Bayside, Queens]].<ref name=NYUAlum />

Davis attended [[New York University College of Arts & Science]], where he graduated<ref name=NYUAlum /> ''[[magna cum laude]]'' with a degree in [[political science]]{{sfn|Davis|2013|pages=13–14}} and [[Phi Beta Kappa]] in 1953.
