NY 23B leads northwest {{convert|4|mi|0}} to downtown [[Hudson, New York|Hudson]], NY 9H leads north {{convert|13|mi}} to [[Kinderhook (town), New York|Kinderhook]], and NY 23 leads east {{convert|12|mi}} to [[Hillsdale, New York|Hillsdale]] and {{convert|15|mi}} to the [[Massachusetts]] border. Routes 9H and 23 combined lead south {{convert|4|mi|0}} to [[U.S. Route 9 in New York|U.S. Route 9]] in the town of [[Livingston, New York|Livingston]]. The center of Red Mills is along NY 23, {{convert|1|mi}} east of Claverack hamlet. From Red Mills, [[New York State Route 217|NY 217]] leads northeast {{Convert|4|mi|0}} to [[Philmont, New York|Philmont]].

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the CDP has a total area of {{convert|7.8|km2|disp=flip}}, of which {{convert|0.05|km2|disp=flip|2}}, or 0.60%, is water.<ref name="Census 2010"/> [[Claverack Creek]], a tributary of the [[Hudson River]], flows westward as the southern edge of the CDP, south of the centers of the two hamlets.
