==Early life==

Persoon was born in [[Cape Colony]] at the [[Cape of Good Hope]], the third child of an immigrant [[Pomerania]]n father, Christiaan Daniel Persoon, and [[Netherlands|Dutch]] mother, Wilhelmina Elizabeth Groenwald.<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Gorter |first1=GJMA |title=The Life and Work of Christiaan Hendrik Persoon |journal=Mycologist |date=1990 |volume=4 |issue=3 |pages=106-107}}</ref> His mother died soon after he was born. In 1775, at the age of thirteen, he was sent to Europe for his education.
