The city is located in the central part of the state along [[U.S. Route 82 in Alabama|U.S. Route 82]], which runs from southeast to northwest to the north of the city, leading southeast {{convert|70|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Montgomery, Alabama|Montgomery]], the state capital, and northwest {{convert|35|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Tuscaloosa, Alabama|Tuscaloosa]]. Alabama State Routes [[Alabama State Route 25|25]] and [[Alabama State Route 219|219]] both run through the center of the city from south to north. AL-25 leads northeast {{convert|21|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Montevallo, Alabama|Montevallo]] and southwest {{convert|38|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Greensboro, Alabama|Greensboro]]. AL-219 leads north {{convert|7|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Alabama State Route 5]] north of Brent and south {{convert|42|mi|km|abbr=on}} to [[Selma, Alabama|Selma]].

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters.
