==History==
[[Cherokee]] County was established on January 9, 1836, and named after the Cherokee people who once lived in the area. The famous Cherokee chief, [[Pathkiller]], lived in [[Turkeytown (Cherokee town)|Turkeytown]] near the present town of Centre. In 1836 the newly founded town of [[Cedar Bluff, Alabama|Cedar Bluff]] became the county seat, but in 1844 the county seat was moved to the more centrally located town of Centre.<ref name=alabama>{{Cite encyclopedia | title = Centre | encyclopedia = Encyclopedia of Alabama | date = December 10, 2009 | url = http://www.encyclopediaofalabama.org/face/Article.jsp?id=h-1306 | accessdate = January 12, 2010}}</ref> The name was chosen, and carries the British English spelling, because of this central location in the county.<ref name=chamber>{{Cite web | title = History | work = Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce | url = http://www.cherokee-chamber.org/history.php | accessdate = January 12, 2010 | url-status = dead | archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20100114132623/http://www.cherokee-chamber.org/history.php | archivedate = January 14, 2010 }}</ref> In 2011, Centre began allowing the sale of alcoholic beverages, and is no longer a [[dry county|dry city]].
