Coleman graduated from [[Wilbert Tucker Woodson High School]], [[Fairfax, Virginia]], in 1978.<ref name="NASA bio" /> In 1978–1979, she was an exchange student at [[Røyken Upper Secondary School]] in [[Norway]] with the [[AFS Intercultural Programs]].
