==History== Calvin Township's first public school was built in 1834. Calvin Township was organized in 1835 and named for [[Calvin Britain]] who represented Cass County in the state legislature.{{sfn|Romig|1986|page=94}} Calvin Township along with Cass County generally was part of the [[Underground Railroad]]. In 1850 Calvin Township's population was 25.3% African-American.<ref>Ernestine K. Enomoto and David L. Angus. "African American School Attendance in the 19th Century: Education in a Rural Northern Community, 1850-1880" in ''The Journal of Negro Education'', Vol. 64, No. 1 (Winter, 1995), pp. 42-51</ref> Many of these families are of mixed Native ancestry, especially from the Saponi, Lumbee, and Pamunkey tribes.
