Settlement began in 1803.

The Town of Butler was formed from the [[Wolcott (town), New York|Town of Wolcott]] in 1826.

Butler Correctional Facility was a New York State medium security prison. Butler Correctional Facility was located in the northeastern part of town near the hamlet of [[Westbury, Wayne County, New York|Westbury]].
