Burlington was laid out in 1832 by David Stipp – an employee of the [[United States General Land Office]]<ref>{{cite web | url=http://www.burlingtonindiana.org/info/2013-03-08-15-13-22/history.html | title=History | publisher=Town of Burlington, Indiana | access-date=June 2, 2014}}</ref> in [[Crawfordsville, Indiana]] – about a year after settlers first appeared in the area.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://burlingtonindiana.org/info/2013-03-08-15-13-22/history.html|title=Burlington of Carroll County Indiana}}</ref> Stipp donated land for the town's first school house. The town was incorporated in 1967.
