==Etymology==
The term ''buccaneer'' derives from the Caribbean [[Arawak language|Arawak]] word ''[[buccan]]'', which refers to a wooden frame on which [[Tainos]] and [[Island Caribs|Caribs]] slowly roasted or smoked meat, commonly [[manatee]]. The word was adopted into [[French language|French]] as ''boucan'', hence the name ''boucanier'' for French hunters who used such frames to smoke meat from [[feral]] [[cattle]] and [[Razorback|pigs]] on [[Hispaniola]].
