==History==
The county was formed in 1847 with territories annexed from [[Kanawha County, West Virginia|Kanawha]], [[Cabell County, West Virginia|Cabell]], and [[Logan County, West Virginia|Logan]] counties. In 1863, West Virginia's counties were divided into [[civil township]]s, with the intention of encouraging local government. This proved impractical in the heavily rural state, and in 1872 the townships were converted into [[minor civil division|magisterial districts]].<ref>Otis K. Rice & Stephen W. On February 1, 2006, two fatal [[mining accident]]s occurred in the communities of [[Uneeda, West Virginia|Uneeda]] and [[Wharton, West Virginia|Wharton]] in Boone County. These two deaths with the addition of January's [[2006 Sago Mine disaster|Sago Mine disaster]] and the [[2006 Aracoma Alma Mine disaster|Aracoma Alma Mine disaster]] caused [[List of Governors of West Virginia|West Virginia Governor]] [[Joe Manchin]] to close all of West Virginia's mines in a "mine safety stand-down."
