==Early life and education== Dole was born on July 22, 1923, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Bina M. Dole had been a star high school athlete in Russell, and Kansas basketball coach [[Phog Allen]] traveled to Russell to recruit him to play for the [[Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball|Jayhawks basketball team]]. While at KU, Dole was on the basketball team, the track team, and the football team. In football, Dole played at the [[End (gridiron football)|end]] position.
