== Name, symbol, and themes ==

The name as well as the symbol of the party were selected by the founders. The name "Bharatiya Janata Party" literally translates to "Indian People's Party". Similar to Lotus, the Saffron colour also has a major significance within Hinduism.<ref name=":0" /> The most common flag used by the party is predominantly saffron with a stripe of green in the left.
