It has been suggested by many that the town is called Between because it is equidistant to [[Atlanta]] and [[Athens, Georgia|Athens]].<ref>{{cite news | url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=4dBWAAAAIBAJ&pg=2267%2C2879765 | title=Some towns sure have funny names | work=The Miami News | access-date=May 19, 2015 | author=| pages=4A}}</ref> It is also between Walton County's two largest cities, [[Loganville, Georgia|Loganville]] and [[Monroe, Georgia|Monroe]]. Actually, strong public opposition to annexation by either Loganville or Monroe resulted in a successful public movement to incorporate the area, which struggled with the challenge of choosing a name for the new town.
