Berkeley County was established in 1682. It was named after [[John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton|John]] and [[William Berkeley (governor)|William Berkeley]], co-owners of the [[Province of Carolina]].<ref>{{cite book|author=Federal Writers' Project|author-link=Federal Writers' Project|title=Palmetto Place Names|url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.c056089075&view=1up&seq=18|year=1941|publisher=Sloane Printing Co.|page=12}}</ref>  It became part of the Charleston District in 1769. It did not exist as a District during most of the 19th century and generally was part of the [[South Carolina Lowcountry|Low Country]] culture. In 1882, after Democrats regained control of the state legislature following the [[Reconstruction era (United States)|Reconstruction era]], they established the current incarnation of Berkeley County, with its seat at [[Mount Pleasant, South Carolina|Mount Pleasant]]. The county seat was moved in 1895 to Moncks Corner.<ref name=Newberry/> Berkeley is also known for Revolutionary War connections.
The [[Old Berkeley County Courthouse (South Carolina)|Old Berkeley County Courthouse]] was listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]] in 1971.<ref name="nris">{{NRISref|version=2010a}}</ref>
