The village is mentioned in the ''[[Domesday Book]]''. The name comes from ''ascam'' or ''ascha'' meaning "enclosure of ash-tree". Before the Conquest the villages of Askham Richard and nearby Askham Bryan were one manor belonging to Edwin, Earl of Mercia.
