==Early life==
Maupin was born in [[Washington, D.C.]], to Diana Jane (Barton) and Armistead Jones Maupin.<ref name="enotes.com"/> His great-great-grandfather, Congressman [[Lawrence O'Bryan Branch]], was from North Carolina and was a railroad executive and a [[Confederate States Army|Confederate]] general during the [[American Civil War]].<ref name="logicalfamily17">{{cite book|last1=Maupin|first1=Armistead|title=[[Logical Family: A Memoir]]|date=2017|publisher=Penguin|location=London, U.K.|isbn=9780857523518|page=17|quote=That's Grandpa Branch.
