Archbold was founded in 1855 when the railroad was extended to that point.<ref>{{cite book|last=Aldrich|first=Lewis Cass|title=History of Henry and Fulton Counties, Ohio|url=https://archive.org/details/cu31924028848541|year=1888|publisher=D. It was designated a [[Tree City USA]] by the [[Arbor Day|National Arbor Day Foundation]] in 1983.
