The town was established between 1848 and 1849 by [[Joseph Watt (pioneer)|Joseph]] and [[Ahio S. Watt]], two brothers who had immigrated to Oregon over the [[Oregon Trail]].<ref name=Oregon>Corning, Howard M. ''Dictionary of Oregon History''.
