==Geography== Amherst Center is located in the west-central part of the town of Amherst at {{Coord|42|22|49|N|72|31|11|W|type:city}} (42.380392, -72.519821).<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|accessdate=2011-04-23|date=2011-02-12|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> It is bordered to the north by [[North Amherst, Massachusetts|North Amherst]], to the south by [[South Amherst, Massachusetts|South Amherst]], and to the west by the town of [[Hadley, Massachusetts|Hadley]]. The CDP extends north as far as Eastman Lane and Tilson Farm Road, east to the [[New England Central Railroad]] and East Street, and south to Mill Lane and East Hadley Road.<ref>{{cite web| url=https://tigerweb.geo.census.gov/tigerweb/| title=TIGERweb: Amherst Center CDP, Massachusetts| publisher=Geography Division, U.S. Census Bureau| access-date=August 10, 2017}}</ref> [[Amherst College]] is in the center of the CDP, south of College Street and east of Pleasant Street, while the [[University of Massachusetts Amherst]] is in the northwestern part of the CDP. According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the CDP has a total area of {{convert|12.8|sqkm|order=flip}}, of which {{convert|0.05|sqkm|order=flip|2}}, or 0.41%, are water.<ref name="Census 2010"/> The Fort River, a westward-flowing tributary of the [[Connecticut River]], flows through the southeastern part of the CDP.
