The area, which would one day become Alpine, was settled by William Wordsworth and several other homesteading families in the fall of 1850.<ref>{{cite web |title=Alpine City History |url=https://www.alpineut.gov/179/Alpine-City-History |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190408165555/http://www.alpinecity.org/alpine-city-history |archive-date=April 8, 2019 |access-date=2019-05-15 |website=City of Alpine |language=en}}</ref> The town was originally called Mountainville, and under the latter name settlement was first made in 1851.<ref>{{cite book|title=The Utah Genealogical and Historical Magazine, Volumes 9-10|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=L7M3AQAAIAAJ&pg=RA1-PA9|year=1918|page=9}}</ref> The city was renamed because the views from the elevated town site were compared to the [[Swiss Alps]].<ref>{{cite book|last=Leigh|first=Rufus Wood|title=Five hundred Utah place names|url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015013530756;view=1up;seq=11|year=1961|publisher=Deseret News Press|location=Salt Lake City|page=1}}</ref> In the 1860s Mrs. Joseph Walton made a flag to represent the city. The flag was carried across the county, it flew for 40 years.<ref name=":0" />
